Trends In Men's Formal Wear - 2010

Contrary to what The Men's Warehouse claim - Men are usually the first to reduce spending in case of an economic slowdown, statistics tell a different story. Recession has found women resisting the urge to splurge and men's purchases actually increased by 5%.

My personal opinion is that Men are finally giving due weightage to appearance and right clothing. Women are climbing the corporate ladder too often and fast. And it has finally dawned upon the Modern Man that evaluation by others based on one's appearance is of great consequence. Particularly in a business environment where impressions are made in the first 30 seconds and money is at stake!!!

Men's fashion trends have undergone many changes too. Off late though very few colours have been introduced; trends indicate that grey, black and white still reign supreme. Suit trends for men generally last over several years, yet 2009 has been a turning point. Blame the recession or the end of the ‘manorexic era' well-groomed men now turn to the classics (proven timeless pieces) for inspiration. The English suit best fits the modern man's silhouette viz. broad shoulders, a slim waist and legs. Double Breasted Suits too are tailored to fit the V-shaped, well-worked body. Three-piece suits are back but with a difference. You need not stick to wearing three matching piece. At the same time it's advisable to stick to a similar colour palette and stripes. Loose pleated trousers balanced with a fitted waistcoat and/or jacket is a viable option.

Modern Man has less assistance when in a dilemma as to what is the ‘right attire" for any occasion. For a Black Tie Event, one needs a black tuxedo suit with a vest or cummerbund, a white tuxedo shirt and a black bow tie. The White Tie Event dictates that a man wears a long tailcoat in white or black paired with matching trousers and ensemble. A crisp white shirt with diamond studs and matching cuff links teamed with a white cotton vest with jacket covering the waistcoat and tails just ending above your knees. Black silk knee socks with opera slippers embellished with a crest and a top hat if you choose to wear one and you are ready to face the evening.

The fit, cut and fabric of your clothing indicates to the informed observer of your status and the significance you attach to the event. Take your time to study etiquettes and dress code disciplines if you are stationed in life to attend such events. The Oscar Awards Ceremony and Fashion Show Runways are the places to look for Men's Formal wear in High Fashion.

Must-haves in the Modern Man's Wardrobe:

Smart black jeans or trousers - when worn with a trendy shirt lends a business like air suitable for any meeting; when topped with a colourful T-shirt and a pair of smart shoes lends a relaxed look. On a date - a suit jacket worn over a shirt and tie adds a sophisticated touch; thrown over a casual shirt with buttons undone look stylish. Add jewellery and you are sure to look gaudy. Avoid white socks and trainers at all costs.
